Ever find yourself running a business that feels more like a hobby? I get it. I’ve been there – feeling like I’m just managing a bunch of tasks without really making a dent in the things that matter most: sales and revenue.
Here’s a snapshot of my week: Last Friday, I was buried under client work, endless email threads, and an overstuffed to-do list. I was feeling busy, and I convinced myself I was crushing it. I was playing the part of the busy entrepreneur, juggling client deliverables and administrative tasks like a pro.
But then… BAM!💥My business coach’s words from two years ago hit me like a ton of bricks:
“If it doesn’t generate revenue, it’s a hobby.”
And I thought, “Ouch.” That hurts, but it’s true.”
You might be thinking, “Wait, Amy, you’ve been in sales for almost three decades, how could this be a problem?” Well, the truth is, even after all these years, I still need those hard reminders to keep my focus where it belongs: on the money-making activities.
So, here’s my sales tip for you (with a side of tough love, of course):
✅ Block Your Power Hours: Identify when you’re most productive and block off those hours for revenue-focused activities. No distractions, no admin, just pure sales work.
✅ The “Revenue First” Rule: Every morning, ask yourself: “What’s the ONE thing I can do today that will directly impact my bottom line?” Knock that out first, then move on to the rest.
✅ Prospect Like a Pro: Set daily outreach targets – calls, emails, or LinkedIn messages. Make this part of your routine, just like your morning coffee.
✅ Automate the Small Stuff: Use tools to automate tasks that aren’t directly generating revenue. If it’s repetitive, there’s a tool for that!
✅ The ‘No’ Power Hour: Dedicate one hour a week to saying “no” to tasks that don’t support your revenue goals. Sounds harsh? It’s actually smart and strategic.
Listen, we’re not just creative professionals or storytellers – we’re business owners. We need to keep the lights on, and we need to monetize our talent.
So let’s make a pact: no more accidental hobbies disguised as businesses. Let’s prioritize, strategize, and build the empires we deserve.
Here’s to turning those “hobbies” into thriving empires.
