Confession time:
I’m a closeted introvert. For years, I hated networking. The small talk, the name tags, the pressure to “pitch” myself — it all felt like an awkward performance I never signed up for.
But everything changed when I stopped treating networking like a business card swap… and started seeing it for what it could be: a chance to meet genuinely interesting, high-quality people — right here in my own community.
No, that shift didn’t magically turn me into a networking pro overnight (still not a fan of name tags). But it did help me find my groove — and actually enjoy it.
And with summer coming (aka peak networking season), here’s how I’m approaching it these days — and how you can too:
Make the First Move — Online First
Don’t wait until you’re awkwardly hovering by the cheese tray. A thoughtful DM or comment before the event can break the ice and make real-life convos feel way more natural.
Ditch the Elevator Pitch — Start a Real Conversation
Try this instead:
“I help teams fall in love with their sales process. What’s your relationship with selling?”
You’ll get real answers — and probably a few laughs too.
Ask Questions That Stick
Skip “So, what do you do?”
Try: “What’s lighting you up in your work right now?”
It leads to richer, more memorable conversations.
Go Where Your People Are
Not all networking happens in beige conference rooms. Look for women-owned biz events, creative panels, or community mixers. The energy? Totally different (and often way better).
Follow Up with Intention — Not Automation
Send a quick, personal note within 48 hours:
“I really enjoyed our convo about [insert cool topic here].”
The goal isn’t to close — it’s to connect.
The Spark:
Networking is a long game. It doesn’t have to be loud, salesy, or draining. It just has to be intentional.
And if you’re an introvert like me, remember:
You don’t need to work the whole room.
You just need to connect with one great person. That’s where the magic happens.
