Celebrating Wins—Without the “L” Word
As we celebrate the luck of the Irish this week, let’s take a moment to ask: What’s luck really got to do with it? (Cue Tina Turner vibes!) Is it really luck, or is it something more?
How often have you brushed off your success with, “I guess I was just lucky”? It’s a common habit, especially for women, to downplay achievements and chalk them up to chance. But here’s the truth: luck isn’t magic. It’s what happens when preparation meets opportunity.
I remember sitting in a meeting with my sales manager, sharing my “wins” from the previous month. I had just landed a coveted client, and when asked how I did it, I shrugged and said, “I guess I’m just lucky.” I left that meeting frustrated with myself. I had worked incredibly hard for that client—from research to outreach to negotiations. Why had I downplayed my effort? From that day on, I made a pact: no more calling it “luck.” Instead, I would outline the steps I took to make it happen. That simple shift not only reminded me of my value but also reinforced it to my managers.
Success isn’t about luck. It’s about setting clear intentions, taking consistent action, and showing up, day after day. The next time you land a client, close a deal, or crush a sales goal, don’t attribute it to luck. Own it. Celebrate it. Be vocal about the work it took to get there.
Let’s make a pact. The next time you’re tempted to say you were “lucky,” swap it for, “My hard work paid off.”
Because it did.
